Cherie deville – Future Darkly Pandemic Kate, and The Free Man Published: February 4, 20,21 Kate glances at her to-do lists on the counter. It is a list of all her rituals as coping mechanisms for agoraphobia. Kate goes through the list. Kate quickly gets overwhelmed by the number of items on the list. Finally, she puts her marker down on top of the counter. After suppressing her panic through controlled breathing, she cleaned her hands and put on latex gloves before walking off. Kate sets her sights on completing the task and meticulously cleans and protects every corner of her house. The phone rings. She glances at her phone and decides to let it ring. Kate’s sibling leaves an annoying, repetitive message on the answering system, reminding her that she has some plants and is frustrated. The message hangs, and a beep sounds. On the front steps to Kate’s small house, you will see the front door opening a crack. Kate grabs the plant with a grabber stick and sticks her gloved finger out of the door. She can’t reach them and, after many painful attempts to drag them inside, she finally gives up. Kate immediately takes a shower and scrubs her entire body to clean herself. Her eyes start to close as she scrubs her body and she lets her mind wander. She starts to think about people walking along the streets, their smiles, their conversations, and the wind blowing through them. She scrubs, and the tension in her eyes is evident. She is distracted by blurred faces and masks. She notices a pair slamming on dirt. Kate licks the dirt off her face and lets her hands slide down her body. She feels more awake. She sees a mask slowly falling on the ground and being stomped upon by the boots. She then sees Dick Chibbles, the man who is wearing the boots. Kate feels a bit edgy and starts to feel a little more comfortable.
